Waste Management and Renewable Energy Policy

Generate Upcycle works at the state/provincial, national and international level to support regulatory and policy frameworks that create successful environments for organic waste recycling. Our policy work lets communities embrace sustainable long-term solutions to managing food waste, generating renewable energy, and reducing GHG emissions from landfills.

United States

In the U.S., Generate Upcycle works hand in hand with its industry associations, peers, research, and other partners to advance state and federal food waste diversion, renewable energy, and climate policy frameworks. We have made great strides in a number of states on policies such as Low Carbon Fuel Standards, renewable natural gas blending mandates, and organics recycling requirements.  We are focusing on investment and production tax credits at the federal level.

United Kingdom

The U.K. government recently extended the Green Gas Support Scheme to keep investment flowing into the anaerobic digestion sector during a time of unprecedented energy security concerns. The scheme will last until the government completes the consultation process and launches the Future Biomethane Framework. Upcycle is an active participant in these key policy development processes with our partners at the Green Gas Task Force and the Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association. Our education and outreach also includes regularly hosting tours of our facilities for our representatives in government, media, and industry groups.

Canada

Upcycle works closely with the Canadian federal government on climate and clean energy policy. In partnership with the Canadian Biogas Association and the Renewable Natural Gas Coalition, we support performance-based policies that drive long-term investment and efficient use of public funds, including the Clean Fuel Regulations, which create strong market signals for clean fuel producers.

At the provincial level, we collaborate with Waste to Resource Ontario and the Ontario Environment and Industry Association to strengthen and enforce food waste diversion policies. Upcycle also serves on the steering committee of the Canadian Low-Emission Energy Registry, helping develop a national system to track and verify low-emission fuel credits, including renewable natural gas/biomethane.
