Our Food Waste Recycling Process
We design solutions for every stage of the food waste journey, from collection to clean energy output and digestate production.
1. Collection
Food waste from municipalities to manufacturers is gathered and delivered to our regional facilities.
2. Pre-Processing
Organic waste is prepared to enter the digesters at our facilities. At our facilities with depackaging capabilities, packaging is removed and sorted for recycling.
3. Anaerobic Digestion
Microrganisms quickly break down biodegradable waste in oxygen-free tanks, producing biogas and nutrient-rich digestate.
4. Energy & Fertilizer Production
Biogas is upgraded into renewable natural gas or used to generate electricity; digestate can be used as a sustainable fertilizer.
Who We Work With
We partner with organizations committed to sustainability and responsible waste management:
- Food Manufacturers & Distributors: We manage organic waste responsibly, simplify compliance, and provide verifiable certificates of destruction.
- Municipal Waste Programs: We support city-wide landfill diversion and sustainability targets.
“Over one year, we process about 1 million tons of organic material, enabling our customers to avoid 447,000 MTCO2e.”
Environmental & Economic Benefits
Food waste recycling does more than reduce waste — it supports the local economy.
- Diverts waste from landfills and lowers GHG emissions
- Creates renewable energy and sustainable fertilizer for local use
- Reduces waste management costs and regulatory risks
- Contributes to local job creation and circular economy growth
Compliance & Policy Alignment
Generate Upcycle operates in full compliance with federal and regional waste diversion regulations. We support policy frameworks that create successful environments for organic waste recycling.
