AVG Imperial Facility
AVG Imperial Anaerobic Digestion and Biogas Plant is one of the largest renewable electricity-generating facilities in the United Kingdom. The facility processes all types of agricultural feedstock and commercial residues from the Middlesbrough region, generating enough electricity to power 13,000 homes every year and producing 100,000 tonnes of sustainable fertilizer for use on surrounding farmland—all while using agricultural feedstock.
AVG Imperial can deliver up to 44,000 MWh of renewable electricity to the grid, delivering power to more than 13,000 homes in the Redcar and wider North East region. The facility was constructed in 2017, but thanks to investments from Generate Upcycle, AVG Imperial will undergo major upgrades in the coming years. An expansion is underway that includes biomethane upgrading and gas-to-grid technology, as well as conversion of digestate tanks into anaerobic digesters, which will increase its capacity to provide even more local renewable energy.
AVG Imperial processes up to 109,000 tonnes of organic waste per year. By accepting all kinds of municipal and commercial waste, AVG Imperial helps businesses and communities achieve greenhouse gas reduction goals and sustainability targets. The facility also produces bio fertilizer for use on farmland in the North East region, sustaining a circular economy that supports local businesses and jobs while reducing agricultural waste in landfills.
