Biopower Hartlepool Facility
The Biopower Hartlepool Anaerobic Digester and Biogas Plant is one of the largest renewable energy providers in the United Kingdom. The facility uses the biological process of anaerobic digestion to produce biomethane for electricity generation and digestate, an organic source of fertiliser used on fields at the region’s farms. Biopower Hartlepool has the capacity to process 109,000 tonnes of commercial and municipal organic feedstock every year—food waste that would otherwise go to landfills.
After purchasing Biopower Hartlepool in 2021, Generate Upcycle invested in extensive upgrades to increase efficiency at the plant. The plant now has the capacity to produce more than 45,000 MWh annually of renewable electricity through biomethane-powered electricity generation and is a provider of Renewable Obligation Certificates. Biopower Hartlepool now creates enough renewable electricity to power 13,000 homes in the community.
Thanks to increased capacity at Biopower Hartlepool, the anaerobic digesters can now process 109,000 tonnes of agricultural and distillery waste from commercial and municipal sources. In addition to renewable energy, this biological recycling process produces 100,000 tonnes of organic-based fertiliser per year.
By accepting all kinds of municipal and commercial waste, Biopower Hartlepool helps many businesses achieve greenhouse gas reduction goals and sustainability targets. The facility also produces fertiliser for use on farmland in the North East region, sustaining a circular economy that supports local businesses and jobs while reducing food waste in landfills.
